About
The SOE has a student body of approximately 1,500 students that is among the most diverse in the UNC system. Approximately 75% of our students are enrolled in graduate programs and 25% are enrolled in undergraduate programs. The SOE is top ranked in the U.S. News and World Report ranking of graduate schools of education. Counselor Education was ranked 11th in the nation and Library and Information Sciences ranked 29th with the specialty area of School Library Media ranking 10th. The SOE was also top ranked in the U.S. News and World Report Best Online Master’s in Education Programs.
The faculty of the SOE includes nearly 100 full-time professors who are highly accomplished scholars, teachers, and partners with community organizations and schools.

The School of Education offers seven undergraduate licensure programs (alone or with other university academic units), with an additional nine programs offered through other university academic units. Initial licensure programs include: Art; Birth–Kindergarten; Comprehensive Science; Comprehensive Social Studies; Dance; Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; Elementary Education; English; Health/Physical Education; Mathematics; Middle Grades Education (Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies); Music; World language studies (French, Spanish); School Social Work; Special Education (General Curriculum, Dual Licensure with Elementary Education); and Theatre Arts.
At the graduate level, master’s programs leading to an advanced level license include: Birth-Kindergarten; Comprehensive Science (Middle or Secondary); Comprehensive Social Studies (Middle or Secondary); Dance; Elementary Education (with a concentration in Elementary Mathematics or Elementary Science); English/Language Arts (Middle or Secondary); English as a Second Language; Instructional Technology Specialist; Mathematics (Middle or Secondary); Middle Grades Education; Media Coordinator; Music; Reading; School Administration; School Counseling; School Social Work; Special Education: General Curriculum. A post-master's certificate is offered in School Administration and add-on licensure programs are offered in the areas of Birth through Kindergarten, Elementary Mathematics, Elementary Science, English as a Second Language, Media Coordinator, Media Supervisor, Reading, and Special Endorsement in Computer Education. A post-baccalaureate certificate is offered in Mental Health in Children and Adolescents which leads to a sixth-year advanced School Counseling license for candidates who are in or have completed the MS School Counseling program.
The School of Education was re-accredited by CAEP in 2022 at both the initial and advanced levels and is valid through the CAEP Accreditation System, for seven years, from 2022–29. Programs accredited through other accrediting agencies and not included in the CAEP review include:
- Programs in the School of Music (National Association of Schools of Music)
- Programs in the School of Dance (National Association of Schools of Dance)
- Programs in the School of Theatre (National Association of Schools of Theatre)
- Programs in the School of Art (National Association of Schools of Art)
- Social Work programs (Council on Social Work Education)
- School Library programs (American Library Association)
- School Counseling programs (Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational programs)
Undergraduate and graduate programs are recognized by the American Library Association, Council on Social Work Education, National Association for the Education of Young Children, Council for Exceptional Children, National Association of Schools of Dance, National Association of Schools of Music, National Association of Schools of Theatre, and Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs.
The School of Education is a professional school that strives to prepare outstanding practitioners, study the profession, create and disseminate new knowledge in professional education, and engage in field services and apply research findings. The SOE offers over 20 different graduate degree programs, many of which include a range of specialty concentrations to allow our students to focus on topics most relevant to their interests and professional goals. Degree programs include seven undergraduate programs and 15 graduate programs spanning master's and doctoral degrees. The degree programs are complemented by numerous non-degree certificate and add-on licensure programs.
